Let me show you around. We’re Saltdean Lodge Number 8039, a friendly down-to-earth freemason’s lodge right in the centre of Brighton. If you’re looking for friendship, tradition, socials, intrigue, meaning in life — you can find it all here.
They’re bold claims. Tell me more.
You’ve got to back yourself, right? Freemasonry is an ocean, you can dive in as deep as you like. Many of us are here just for the friendship. But others look…a little deeper. We’ll explain all that when we meet again.
And you’re called Saltdean but you’re not actually in Saltdean?
Correct. We were founded there 60 years ago, but now we meet in Brighton. Our members come from all over — Brighton, Southwick, Lancing, Shoreham, Burgess Hill… you name it.
So what’s Saltdean’s vibe?
Vibe?
Vibe, thing, USP.
Noted. We’re Super Saltdean. We’re really good at what we do. You know all that tradition and symbol stuff they talk about in Freemasonry? That. We’ve got some very experienced members and we work hard to nail all that side. It’s a joy to behold.
But we’re not just about ceremonies — we’re social. We meet up for breakfasts, nights out, events and we raise money for charity….
Back to the tradition and symbol stuff for a minute. So that is a thing then? And these images are painting a certain picture…..
Artistic license! Don’t get bogged down in the tradition and symbol. It is a thing, but it’s also not. I will explain, but another time.
Who runs the show?
That’s Terry. Experienced, well regarded, drinks like a fish. You’d like him.
I’m sure I would. Are there other lodges around here too?
There are about 160 lodges in Sussex alone. Let’s see. We’ve got friends at St Cecilia Lodge, which has a music and entertainment ‘vibe’. There’s Royal Pavilion Lodge, which helps newer members get involved. There’s the Football Lodge, which is, erm, pretty self-explanatory, right? It’s just about finding the right ones for you.
